My advise to students would be to study well and work hard....its the only way to suceed in the US.
The visa interview wasnt that difficult. But I had prepared for the worst. And I guess that mantra worked for me. I had to write GRE n TOEFL. I prepared using practicing test CDs. I attended IMFS coaching classes. The also counseled me on institutions abroad. It was easy to get the tickets, got them through Udaan Travels (Borivali, Mumbai). I flew Jet Airways. It was a comfortable journey. The airline did not offer a student fare. My fare was approximately Rs. 39000. I landed at Liberty Newark Airport and its about 15 mins by car to the institution. The baggage rules were 3 Luggage bags, 69kg in total (23kg each), additional 10 kg Hand luggage was allowed (here student factor comes into play). Excess baggage was allowed depending on the situation. I did not face any immigration issues at the port of entry. University just had the pick-up service for international students. A 4 seater car was arranged for us.
I am happy with the way the program has been structured, it has been satisfactory until now. Professors are good enough. www.ratemyprofessors.com. Lecture halls are satisfactory and the library is excellent.
I am staying Off campus. Almost all the sports facilities are available at the university. Its not that easy for international students to get part time jobs here. The social scene is fair enough. The night life is also pretty good. But the weather is totally unpredictable. www.weather.com. The Indian student society here handles festive occasions and cultural activities.
There are placement cells at the universities. The Career Development Services helps with the jobs placements, but its not that easy for international students to get jobs. There a campus placement process in place. The work permit process is a little bit difficult. There is probably an alumni society at the University, but I have no idea how it functions.
