I am in a culturally diverse area. It's a very liberal town, the people are always friendly and ready to help. I would suggest taking your first year seriously as it takes a while to settle in and get used to the system and simultaneously studying is difficult.
There are opportunities available but they highly depend on your grades, so a good gpa is needed plus a lot of financial aid goes to citizen students. Finding scholarships and aid is harder for international students and thus keeping your GPA up important.
I have been taking non-major courses as the major related course work usually comes in the third year at the university. I usually have about 18 hours of class a week. The staff and faculty can be helpful only if you put yourself out there, you should actively participate so that your professors know who you are and have a willingness to help you too.
